Survival: Perception
by Ray Voet
Survival: Perception.
J.K. Rowling in Harry Potter and the Order
of the Phoenix tells of Harry and Luna
Lovegood being able to “see,” because they
have experienced, in the presence of death of
friends or relatives, the bat-winged horses
or thestrals that pull their carriages.
People may be aware of concepts and
theories because they have had some prior
acquaintance or knowledge. One needs an
understanding of both materialistic and
nonmaterialistic concepts or perceptions;
otherwise one will find magic, miracles, and
denial (not just a river) invading their consciousness.
Magic and miracles are real to
some people. It is not that a quale is or is
not a personal comprehension. The concept
may be a metaphor, dogma, or belief
of an individual, group, or society. If one is
not aware of the concepts, pro or con for
the personal self, one cannot appreciate the
consequences.
Politics, religion, education, many of
the ‘isms, etc., have a basis legitimate to
the believer. Often, a person has experienced
an ism, then progressed or evolved
to a higher level of awareness. Some people
have unique thinking methods. Often, the
visual-spatial learners, about 30 percent of
the population, are special-creatives. The
rest may be auditory-sequential learners.
The evolution of the human consciousness
continues, perhaps in individuals who have
an awareness that has not been discouraged
by society or education (Linda
Silverman cited.). Werner Heisenberg’s
Uncertainty Principle, 1927, states that one
cannot know the velocity and position of an
electron at the same time. We may not yet
be able to comprehend two opposing theories
without separation. For an example:
Photon as wave
and particle. Or interpersonal
relationships? Wolfgang Pauli’s
hypothesis is that there are ghostly
neutrino particles, implying that
the universe is populated by mass
and energy that is not directly measurable.
Only 4 percent of the universe is
presently measurable. Dark matter is 23
percent and dark energy is 73 percent in/
of the universe, inferred from studies using
space observatories.
Some people, such as Nobel winner
John Nash, Jr., using mathematics, and
artists, perceiving visually, discerned what
was not apprehensible to others. It may be
a special connectivity of the cerebral neurons,
it may be the continuance of awareness
by openness of thought outside of the
box. Pauli’s Exclusion Principle implies that
if there are two or more concepts available,
there are levels of “emergence” where the
phenomenon cannot be understood by the
terms of a level below it, but only by a
higher emergent level. Resources may be
Harold J. Morowitz, 2002, The Emergence of
Everything, and Beck and Cowan, 2002,
Spiral Dynamics. An implication is that the
laws of physics and chemistry can only be
understood through science. A touch of
heresy for some is that one can understand
G-d, “The Big Boss Upstairs,” through the
hows of science, but perhaps not the whys
of existence.
Harry Potter is a wizard in training at
Hogwarts School. He is not a Muggle
(ordinary human like most people) but a
wizard with powers bestowed by his
mother at her death. Another example is
The Force, used by Jedi Luke Skywalker of
Star Wars to assist in his journey. Both
Harry and Luke need to overcome anger
and fears, doubts and heroism, in order to
become fully human. We, also, need to be
aware of other than what we know; yet we
must question and test our perceptions.
Sometimes what we think we know...
is, or is not! We need to find our personal
mountaintops, allowing us to see the vistas
undiscernible at lower levels.
