Couch Potato SIG

I m often asked about Couch Potato
SIG. Experience suggests that for each
person who asks a question, several more usually want to know the same thing.
To save everybody a lot of time (and to save me a great deal of repetition),
here is a transcript of one such conversation.
You're a SIG coordinator. How interesting.
Thank you.
What exactly does your SIG do?
Nothing.
Really! I mean ... if I were to participate in your
SIG this month, come
to one of your events, what types of things would we do?
Nothing.
C'mon ... You can't expect me to believe that a bunch of people will sit
around doing nothing together.
Why not?
Why should I believe that? People — especially Mensans — don't just get
together and do nothing.
That's right. We don't get together and do nothing.
We do nothing together.
I don't understand.
Everybody stays home and does nothing together.
Everybody stays home?
Yes.
There is no turnout at any of your events?
That's right. Couch Potato SIG has both the lowest attendance and the
highest participation of all the SIGs in Minnesota Mensa, possibly even in all
of American Mensa.
Doing what?
Nothing.
You're kidding.
No — I'm quite serious.
Why would anyone become a member of a SIG that doesn't do anything?
I never said we "don't do anything."
I heard you ...
What I said was that we "do nothing."
That's what I just said!
No, you said we "don't do anything."
What's the matter with that? All I'm trying to find out is what the people in your
SIG do.
Take it easy!
I'm not getting excited; please don't say that to me.
I suppose that next
you'll try to tell me not to do anything.
"... to do nothing. I was explaining that people do nothing in Couch
Potato SIG. We just take it easy.
I don't know what you're talking about!
OK, let me try again. Couch Potato SIG is for people like you, who have lots of activities going on in their lives.
We do "nothing" as a way of taking a break from things that cause our
stress. We SIG members have identified relaxation as a priority in our lives,
and have set aside time just to enjoy taking it easy. Look, why don't you
participate in Couch Potato SIG this month, so you can see first-hand what it's
about?
OK, that seems reasonable. Where shall I go this month to
participate in your SIG?
Your house.
My house?
That's right, your house.
There's no way I'm about to invite a bunch of ...
No, you participate by staying at your house, and I'll attend by staying at
mine...
What's the matter? You don't want to have me in your SIG?
Of course I do. Just give me a moment to explain!
Forget it. If your SIG is not going to be doing anything this month, I'm
going to just stay at home.
And do nothing?
Exactly.
Good! I'm glad you've decided to join us after all.
