Cats vs. Dogs
by DeDe Tredinnick
As a dog owner for years, I just
love dogs. Once I figured out that
I was boss of the dog, thanks to Mark
Manzella, dog ownership is the greatest.
Our current dog is a lab mix called Libby.
She is a great dog. She’s a lab, so she’s
very playful and happy. Libby is also very
good. She would rather sever a body part
that make her mom (me) mad.
Then we moved to the country. We
got two free kittens from a neighbor and
put them in the barn. Then I found mice
evidence in my house. Country mice are
smarter than suburban mice. When we
lived in Woodbury, we had mice traps
with peanut butter and we caught mice
(mostly when Bob was out of town and I
had to empty the traps).
We put the same peanut butter traps
here in our country home. Country mice
don’t like peanut butter and went on eating
our crackers and cereals. So we baited
the traps with cheese. These traps snap just
on anything, but the country mice
took the cheese from the traps,
ate it, and were happy.
So we brought these two
adorable kittens into our
house. Well, the second day
a mouse was caught and then
another was caught and now
our house is free of mice.
Mice problems solved,
but now we have these cats.
They are about seven
months old now; Jaguar is the
boy and weighs about eight pounds, and
Snowshoe is the girl. She is much lighter at
five pounds. They are still very cute and
purr constantly. I never knew cats could
purr while they were sleeping or eating.
Anyway. These 13 pounds of feline
are driving me nuts. First of all, I would
like them to understand what nighttime
is. I like 8 to 10 hours of sleep a night. The
cats don’t. So I shut the door on them.
About 5:00 A.M, they start to claw the
carpet outside the door itself. They figure it’s time for me to get
up. I don’t. I throw something at the door
and go back to sleep (this really makes
Bob mad, since the cats don’t wake him
up, but me throwing something does).
Secondly, the cats understand right and
wrong. They just don’t care. Last night I
told my dog to get “down” and I hear two
kittens remove themselves from the kitchen
counters. Now, they got down, but they
were not supposed to be up there in the first
place. They know not to play with the
flowers that Bob buys me, but they do
anyway. So Bob buys me these beautiful
flowers and we have to lock them away, so
the cats don’t ruin them.
Two Sundays ago we were gone from
the house. I had beef cubes thawing on the
counter. We got home and the meat and
most of the bag were gone. Now, we
know that Libby would never go on the
counter. The cats must have gone onto the
counter and pushed the meat to the floor.
This is where the dog and the cats had
their little feast and we had frozen pizza
for dinner.
Thirdly, I know these cats are little,
but they don’t need their food as
urgently as they think they do. The
other day, they are bugging me for
food and we go into the
kitchen and they
have food. I don’t
get it. I know
that sometimes
Libby eats the cat
food, but I think
they think she
does it more than
she actually does.
Fourthly, I hate cat box smell so I clean
the cat box every day. It’s not enough for
them. They watch me clean the cat box and
then they run to be the first one to dirty it.
Like they couldn’t wait to go to the bathroom
until I’ve cleaned the cat box.
I know the point of all this is that
the cats have me trained. That is what
drives me nuts the most. I don’t have
time for this! I need a Mark Manzella
for cats! Now!
