Playing Games

This month my quiz for you is based on five games that I believe that most people have played at one time or another (generally as a child or a parent, I would think). Sorry, I won’t tell you what the names of the games are; you’ll have to figure that out on your own. What I will do is list four rules (or other clues) for each of the five games. The answers are here

1. This game is well known as the “Royal Game of India.”
2. The kit for playing this game requires both white and red pegs.
3. Part of the mechanism of this game requires the weight of a bowling ball catapulting a diver through the air and into a washtub.
4. If an opponent’s pawn is captured, it is sent back to its starting space.
5. The first player to reach the castle is the winner.
6. Parts for the mechanism must be taken and built in numerical order.
7. The first person to reach Square 100 is the winner.
8. When a player draws a card with two color blocks, he moves his playing piece ahead along the path to the second matching color space on the path.
9. A shot is made by a player calling out a letter and number combination.
10. The crank must always be turned in a clockwise direction.
11. Landing on the end of a directional line has no effect; only the start square of the line counts.
12. Any Cheese Cards held by a captured player are turned over to the player who started the mechanism to make the capture.
13. A miss-a-turn or extra-turn square is never the start or end of a directional line.
14. If stuck in the Molasses Swamp, a player must remain there until drawing a card with one or two red blocks on it.
15. An advanced form of this game is known as “Salvo.”
16. The player rolling the highest number when adding the dice together, goes first.
17. If a player is on Square 95 or higher, then a die thrown that would take him past 100 must be ignored; thus a player on Square 99 must ignore all throws that are not 1.
18. The first player to move all his pawns to HOME wins the game.
19. A player must always move in the direction of the signposts, unless directed to move backward by a picture card.
20. It is expected that each player will be honest in announcing “hits” when they are made.
