Donna's Diary — by Donna Myhrer

Growing in the Rain

I have been temping at the local grain elevator for the past two months during the spring seeding season. I began to wonder how much you Mensans out there know about where your dinner comes from. If you are one of those folks who think milk comes from cartons in the supermarket instead of from a cow, you may have a difficult time with the following quiz. It might prove interesting when you look up the answers. (Special thanks to agronomist Terry Sonju, my supervisor at work, for his help with preparing this quiz.)

The answers are here.

True or False

1. The numbering system for planting zones in the continental United States
starts with "00" in the southern tip of Texas and ends with "9" along the
northern tier states. Thus, you would purchase a seed with the
designation "9-75" in North Dakota and with "00-75" in Texas.

2. Canola seed may be purchased with an additive called Helix Xtra.

3. Soybeans are available only in 50-unit containers known as bulk bags.

4. Soybean seed is often inoculated with a bacterium to improve its productivity.

5. Paraquat is an appropriate herbicide to use on corn.

6. Canola plants produce a low-chlorestrol oil that is mainly used for cooking.

7. Alfalfa and soybeans are both members of the plant family, Leguminosae.

8. The Chinese soybean aphid has been an insect pest in this country for
nearly 150 years.

a. the grown corn should be eaten off the cob, rather than using a plate.

b. the planter does not use round notched plastic disks to disperse the seed evenly.

c. the corn kernels will not have thick hard yellow "plates" on them.

11. Some crops, such as canola and soybeans, have been genetically altered to allow for a better range of herbicides to be applied without damaging the crop itself. This practice has the following advantages:

a. the seed of genetically altered crops is cheaper than traditional crop seed.

b. they tolerate a nonselective herbicide (like Round-Up).

c. the plants will be taller and have longer stems so that the herbicide can be applied only to the roots and not affect the rest of the plant.

12. Potash is a

a. type of canola seed.

b. fertilizer.

c. mixture of corn and beans.

13. Farmers in the United States may legally use anhydrous ammonia to:
a. make methamphetamines for their own home use.

b. clean out livestock winter quarters.

c. fertilize crops.

d. gas gophers.

14. The mixture of smooth bromegrass, western wheatgrass, red clover, and yellow sweetclover makes a good:

15. "Sugar Buns" is a type of:

a. field corn. b. confectionary sunflowers. c. sweet corn.

16. Germination means:
